Mark 4:21-34

“Kudzu”

He also said, “With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable will we use for it? It is like a mustard seed, which, when sown upon the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth; yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes the greatest of all shrubs, and puts forth large branches, so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade.”

Here we have another parable that seems innocent and nice. It isn’t. This was meant to be quite socking. Israel is some times referred to different prophetic texts as “The Great Cedar of Lebanon” and “The Mighty Oak.” It is in the braches of these mighty trees that the Eagles make their nest. This is a picture of strength, power and nationalism. But Jesus says that the kingdom of God is like the mustard bush that grows in the garden and provides shelter for the birds of the air. Not quite as grand a vision is it?

But wait it gets worse. Mustard plants were an invasive species that were unwanted and could often render the entire garden unclean and wasted. To add insult to injury ‘the birds of the air” are nothing more than feather covered vermin that we to be avoided whenever possible. What was Jesus thinking!

This would be like saying, “The kingdom of God is like kudzu, it starts as a pretty green little shoot and soon covers and strangles all the trees in the yard and provides a breading ground for the rats.” Doesn’t sound so good now does it? Unless… you’re the rat.

Let us pray…

Lord,
We are thankful for every sign and manifestation of your kingdom in our lives.
The depth of your love for all people continually challenges us.
Too often we become chafed by your words of acceptance for all people.
But this day we give thanks that even the lowest of the low and welcomed in your kingdom.
Give us the assurance that in your mercy there is room for us too. Amen.
